Why should Physicians and Laboratories be worried about Biotin?

Millions of people are taking biotin supplements for the alleged overall health benefits to hair, skin and nails. However, physicians and laboratorians may be concerned about potential biotin interference with immunoassay laboratory tests that could lead to misdiagnosis or mistreatment.

Test methods are available, including those provided by the Abbott Alinity ci-series and ARCHITECT systems, that do not involve biotin-streptavidin interaction in the capture method and/or signal amplification, and therefore are not impacted.
