Turning today's pain into tomorrow's possibilities

As a business leader, you no doubt recognize that attacking the new challenges facing the diagnostic laboratory business with the same old approach just isn’t going to work.

Increasing the value of your laboratory

As we move into the world of value-based health care, laboratories will need to focus beyond costs-per-unit and turnaround times, to metrics such as cost-per-care-episode or cost-per-population. It’s a shift in thinking away from volume to value.

Of course, if only 3 percent of health care expenditures are tied to laboratory services, how can you make a significant impact?

At a recent industry think-tank, dubbed “Project Santa Fe,” leaders from innovative clinical laboratory operations across the country met to discuss the future of the industry. One key point was that the answer lies in finding ways to work in concert with clinicians, health care providers, and payers to provide value that reaches deep inside the other 97 percent of medical expenses.

The takeaway: “If we do nothing, we will be heading toward the cliff of a subsidy model, and we all know subsidized organizations don’t have a sustainable business model.”

Or, put more succinctly, “If we stay in the lab, we will die as a lab.”
