Meeting Government Health Reform Head-on in the United Kingdom

In the UK, just 30% of the population – those with chronic diseases and other health needs – are drawing 70% of the healthcare costs. Simultaneously, the UK has up to 40% fewer doctors and hospital beds than the rest of Europe. In light of these challenges the National Health Service has instituted a reform initiative requiring strategic plans toward reducing unwarranted variation in clinical quality and efficiency. On April 20th, a group of innovative laboratory leaders from England, Scotland and Wales met for a collaborative day of group discussions and break-out sessions aimed at planning how new uses of constantly evolving technology and data analysis could help address this government reform and ultimately alleviate the combined pressures of chronic disease, growing population and shrinking budgets.
