The importance of
Lab benchmarking

Lab Performance Benchmarking aids an organisation to measure and understand where it is positioned amongst its peers, how far it needs to go before it reaches the top and what efficiencies can be made to help it achieve a measurably better healthcare performance.

The Lab Performance Benchmarking initiative from Core Diagnostics at Abbott focuses on best practices to identify ‘next’ practices and provides laboratories taking part with the knowledge they need to strive for continuous lab performance improvement, against key performance indicators (KPIs), by enabling identification of areas that need to be adapted or modified in order to better meet customer needs.

"It is quite reassuring that we are very well placed among our peers and that
our strategic input is accurate, however, there are a lot of drivers to focus more on efficiency.
In particular, we should drive the digital transformation forward."

Dr. Jyoti shetye,

Laboratory operations director, mediclinic group (uae)

"The Laboratory Performance Benchmarking initiative gives an important perspective on our Service, analyzed through an intelligent and very practical filter. Completing the survey has given many examples of how we can implement to achieve levels of process control and excellence. Realizing where we are is the first step in knowing where we want to go."

Drª helena ferreira da silva,

Vdireção serviço de patologia clínica, chma, portugal

Abbott talked to 773 laboratories from 39 countries across Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA).
This Lab Performance Benchmarking initiative aims to provide laboratories with a means to understand how they compare to peers, as well as enabling them to better position their value to clinical and non-clinical decision makers responsible for managing partnerships with laboratories.

Data leads to

Powerful insights

Find out how your lab compares on metrics such as clinician expectation time (CET),
turnaround time (TAT), ISO 15189 Accreditation,
Lean Six Sigma, staff productivity and so much more.

25% of labs measure the cet, yet lab turn-around time is the most commonly monitored

The diagnosis cycle starts before samples arrive at the laboratory yet monitoring often doesn’t begin until the samples arrive. For clinicians, their waiting time starts as soon as they make a request, this is known as clinician expectation time (CET).2

28% of labs in europe, middle east and africa (emea) as iso 15189 accredited; 16% planned to be accredited within 12 months

ISO 15189 accreditation underpins confidences in the quality of medical laboratories through a process that verifies integrity, impartiality, and competence. Accreditation to ISO 15189 varies across EMEA with largest uptake in France.2

39% of the commercial labs in germany, austria and switzerland reported a major shortage of higher skilled staff. Only 11% of hospital labs are affected

Laboratories across EMEA report a shortage of staff. This shortage is more pronounced for higher skilled staff compared to lower skilled staff and more obvious in the commercial than in the hospital sector.2

1710 tests/fte were processed by labs with automation versus 632 tests/fte in labs without

Staff productivity in labs with automation for clinical chemistry, immunoassay and hematology process higher quantities of samples and tests per full-time equivalent (FTE).2

Benchmarking medical laboratory performance on a global scale

Laboratory performance as a relative concept needs repetitive benchmarking for continuous improvement of laboratory procedures and medical processes. The aim of this study was to examine the utility of a specific combination of indicators and survey-based data collection approach, and to establish a global benchmarking dataset of laboratory performance for decision makers in healthcare institutions.

Benchmarking medical laboratory performance: survey validation and results for europe, middle east, and africa

The aim of this study was to establish a good practice approach towards benchmarking for three key dimensions of medical laboratory performance and to generate a tentative snapshot of the current state of the art in the region of Europe, Middle East, and Africa (EMEA). Altogether, the need for stronger integration of laboratories into the clinical care process became apparent and should be a main trajectory of future laboratory management.

Benchmarking diagnostic laboratory performance: survey results for germany, austria, and switzerland

Around the globe operational efficiency of diagnostic laboratories plays a key role to assure patient safety, but how do laboratories achieve this and how do they compare to each other? The aim of this study was to design and pilot a questionnaire in Germany, Switzerland, and Austria to address and compare key aspects of diagnostic laboratory management.

Turn understanding into action

The Lab Performance Benchmark report aims to help labs to stay ahead by first illustrating where they stand when compared to their peers. It enables labs to understand gaps in current provision to identify areas where they can differentiate to achieve business goals and outperform peers.
