Background

Royal Cornwall Hospital Trust serves all surgeries across Cornwall in the southwest of England. Their services cover 47 primary GP sites as well as satellite clinics. The lab receives up to 4,000 patient samples each day from multiple collection sites across the region, usually late in the day.

Challenge

The hospital’s central role in Cornwall meant samples often arrived late, straining lab workflows. Manual booking was time-consuming and prone to errors. Staff shortages further impacted turnaround times. Environmental concerns around plastic waste also prompted a need for more sustainable practices.

Solution

Royal Cornwall Hospital Trust implemented AlinIQ Indexor to transform its sample handling process across 47 GP sites. By automating sample booking, the hospital reduced manual entry time from 15–20 minutes for 60 samples to under 20 seconds. Insulated iLogger transport bags supported temperature stability and automatically tracked transport conditions, helping ensure sample integrity during transit.

This streamlined workflow eliminated manual sorting for couriers and lab staff, saving time and reducing errors. The solution also supported sustainability goals by cutting the use of plastic biohazard waste by 85%, earning the hospital a Green Impact Award.

With faster processing and improved efficiency, the lab now routinely delivers same-day results, even during staffing challenges, helping enhance patient care and operational resilience.
