Background

Torrance Memorial Medical Center (TMMC) is a 443-bed nonprofit hospital in Torrance, California. TMMC faced several operational challenges in its pre-analytical workflow, particularly around sample collection, transport, and processing. Incorporating AlinIQ Indexor into their workflow improved overall laboratory operability. As a result, Torrance Memorial Medical Center has seven collection stations, typically processing around 1,000 samples per day. Incorporating AlinIQ Indexor into the TMMC workflow has allowed them to enjoy a significantly higher sample throughput, along with improved productivity.

Environmental gains along with substantial cost savings were also realized through a reduced use of plastic bags.

Challenge

Before adopting AlinIQ Indexor, lab staff experienced high stress due to unbalanced workloads. Coupled with that was excessive waste from biohazard sample bags, taking a toll on the environment, as well as costing additional money.

Problems with samples and couriers, such as samples not being ready for courier pickup, couriers having to manually verify sample manifests, as well as the lack of visibility into sample status. Workflow inefficiencies had also compromised pre-analytic quality. Additionally, there was no temperature validation during sample transport.

Solution

Torrance Memorial Medical Center adopted AlinIQ Indexor to simplify sample tracking, improve intake, and deliver better service to clients and patients alike.

AlinIQ Indexor is a smart tracking system for patient samples. It gives labs increased visibility during transit, confirms safe delivery and each RFID-tagged sample rack holds 60 tubes which can be digitally scanned into the system in seconds. By reducing manual steps and improving tracking, Indexor helped prevent lost samples and supported faster, more reliable accessioning. Implementation required minimal onsite installation time, with set up taking just 15 minutes per location.
